The
Rice Research Institute of Guangdong Academy of Agricultural
Sciences (GDRRI), formerly known as Rice Experimental
Farm of Zhong Shan University , was founded by Professor
Ding Yin in 1930. GDRRI is a non-profit research institution
and one of the sub-centers of National Rice Improvement
Center. Currently, there are 120 staffs. Among them,
82 are researchers, including 1 academician of Chinese
Academy of Engineering and 41 experts with high-ranking
title. With the establishment of Guangdong Key Laboratory
of New Technology in Rice Breeding and Key Laboratory
of Rice Genetics and Improvement, Ministry of Agriculture
of China, GDRRI is well equipped. Additionally, GDRRI
has offices and laboratories of 5,500 square meters,
experimental farms of 19 hectares and greenhouses
of 600 square meters, and it also boasts a number
of phytotrons and other advanced instruments and equipments.
The advantage of talents and excellent research conditions
in GDRRI strongly support its scien-tech creation.
Both research and development are carried out in GDRRI.
The Research mainly focuses on rice breeding and other
research areas, including rice biotechnology, germplasm
resource, cultivation, physiology and ecology are
also undertaken. The scien-tech development mainly
deals with the production, processing and marketing
of seeds and kernel of rice. Golden Rice Seed Co.,
Ltd. of Guangdong Province and Guangdong Golden Rice
Mills Co., Ltd. were established for the scien-tech
development. Due to their good integration, both research
and development in GDRRI are performing well. GDRRI
is one of the best agricultural institutions in terms
of comprehensive R&D capacity in China. So far,
GDRRI has achieved 148 awards and more than 90% of
them have been put into practical use. About 50% of
the rice planting area in Guangdong province is covered
with varieties bred by the Institute. A social economic
benefit of more than 15 billion yuans has been realized
through the utilization and extension of its achievements.
GDRRI
has received various prizes and honors for its excellent
performance in both its contribution and self development.
In 1995, the Institute was awarded ‘Excellent Institute
in Research and Development’ by Guangdong provincial
government. It ranked the 11th among the 1220 agricultural
research institutions in China in the evaluation of
comprehensive capacity in both research and development
during the ‘Eighth Five-Year-Plan’ period, and entitled
‘Top One Hundred Institutes’. In 2002, the Institute
received a ‘National May First Labor Prize’. Moreover,
GDRRI stands first in the first provincial evaluation
of non-profit institutions with Guangdong advantages
